Google is Quietly Consuming the Internet :: Digg News Central

April 27th, 2008

TechRepublic asks “Will the Google revolution engulf IT departments?” Each time I write a newsletter, about 80% of the items are about Google. They keep innovating faster than other companies their size. Here are some examples of things they have done over the last ~ 2 months.

  • Changes organic search results based on prior search query.
  • Added a search box for site search inside the search results, giving Google a second taste at displaying ads even on navigational queries for a specific website.
  • Started crawling site search forms on trusted sites, which (along with sitelinks, universal search, Youtube, and branded video ads) distributes more traffic to large trusted sites and business partners, with less traffic going to smaller websites (search keeps getting more editorial).
  • Offered App Engine, which provides free hosting to developers (in exchange for being stuck on their network and letting them spy on your usage data and growth).
  • Created a marketplace for people building on the Google network.
  • Begun policing widgets not on their network, a topic that deserves its own post.

Not only are dumb companies buying into the everything Google strategy, but even some semi-intelligent ones are. After logging into Dreamhost recently I was shocked to see them integrating Google apps and email on all customer domains. What happens if/when Google buys GoDaddy? How does Dreamhost compete when Google gives away hosting as a loss leader?

There is big risk to Google consuming the web. The issue is not only information diversity and innovation, but what happens when your Google account gets hacked? I regret my reliance on Gmail, but am unsure how to fix it.

Why SEO Can’t Be Your Only Value Add :: SEO Times

April 27th, 2008

In my early days I played a bit more in the darker side of the game. I fully admit that I built and ran more than 1 or 2 scrapers, aggregators, and MFA style sites, but as a business model those type of sites are really on the decline, and not something I’d ever recommend […]

Ofcom, public service news and the “arms race” :: Mypsace News Bulletin

April 27th, 2008

An interesting reference to search engine optimisation made by Ofcom seems to have gone widely unnoticed, perhaps because it was buried down at the end of the report. In its second public service broadcasting review earlier this month, the watchdog referred to a SEO “arms race”.
It noted that search portals are now the main starting […]

In New Orleans for the eCommerce Summit, Beignets, and Jazz Fest :: Digg News Central

April 27th, 2008

Posted by rebecca

I thought I’d give a quick update as to my Carmen Sandiego-esque whereabouts, so I apologize for the noisy, substance-light post. For those of you who live it up in the Big Easy, I’m in New Orleans from now until Sunday. The ECMTA 2008 Spring eCommerce Summit is happening this Tuesday through Friday, and I was asked to attend. In addition to captaining two lunch roundtables (one on Wednesday and one on Thursday), I’ll also be speaking about social media at the New Media Panel on Thursday from 10:30-11:30. If you’re attending the conference you will receive a discount on an SEOmoz PRO membership, and you’ll get an extra hefty discount if you attend my session, so give in to my bribery and park your ass in my room on Thursday.

In addition to speaking at the conference, I’ll be staying the weekend to attend the Jazz Festival, about which I’m geekily excited. I’ve also been urged by no fewer than three people to stuff my face with beignets at Cafe du Monde and check out the French Quarter, so I’ll likely be running around like a dumb tourist while I’m here. If you live in New Orleans or are attending the eCommerce Summit, drop me a line and perhaps we can grab a drink, talk SEO, or greedily gulp down some gumbo.

FYI: Rand and Jane are in Long Beach for SMX Social Media, so with the Three SEO Musketeers out of the office, Q&A responses may be a bit delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thursday Roundup for the Week of 4/20/08 :: Search Engine Optimization Weekly Report

April 27th, 2008

Posted by rebecca

Stories, news, and other notable items from the past week:

Three star links:

  • BuddyTV (and buddies of SEOmoz) recently received $6 million in funding. They do some smart SEO on their site, so we’re always happy to see an SEO-savvy company get money flung at them. ;)
  • Great, we get a link from the NY Times but it’s about Rand’s facial hair. Maybe next they’ll link to a post about me clipping my toenails.
  • Brent Csutoras talks about Reddit’s new UI and features. A lot of the changes seem positive–I love the content on Reddit, but their interface always seemed boring and too text-heavy.
  • Apparently Wikipedia is going to become an actual encyclopedia in Germany. Their most popular entries will be turned into a book. I bet David Hasselhoff’s entry will be a separate volume.
  • The FBI has taken to posting fake links in order to nab child porn suspects. Apparently the courts approve of this technique, so maybe Sarah can explain to us how this diffuses the whole "entrapment" argument.
  • Apparently Twitter’s uptime is ridiculously high. I wouldn’t know anything about it, of course, because I am the only marketer left in this world who does not have a Twitter profile.
  • StumbleUpon now has 5 million users and has had 5 billion stumbles. I think that roughly half of those stumbles are from Rand while he’s on conference calls. (I totally outed you, Fishkin!)

Four star links:

  • Have a rivalry with a competitor? Try a little friendly competition via advertising–such as these car ads and their escalating ribbing.
  • Apparently nearly $5 billion will be spent on social networking tools by 2013. Web 2.0 has officially asploded, and now businesses are setting up to tackle the next generation of the web. Hell, even Dilbert has gone web 2.0.
  • PBS talks shares the truth about IT consultants and says that while some are great, a lot don’t know squat. The article also provides tips on how to identify a potentially bad or unskilled IT consultant. I think we run into this problem with all types of consultants, especially SEO, but that doesn’t mean that a few bad apples should ruin the bushel. However, it is imperative to be guarded and understand that not all consultants are the cream of the crop. (Why do I keep using agriculture metaphors?)
  • Apparently too many choices can be mentally exhausting. I’ll admit to being indecisive about trivial matters–one time I stood in the produce aisle at the grocery store for about 10 minutes while I pondered whether or not I wanted to buy an acorn squash (okay, seriously, I’ll stop with the fruits and veggy mentions…though now I am getting pretty hungry).
  • This style guide for blog design is really cool and provides great examples.

Five star links:

  • UrbanSpoon provides us with a fantastic example of how to leverage newsworthy topics by creating link bait for your site. They took a quote about Barack Obama voters being (I’m paraphrasing here) "latte drinkers," "Prius drivers," "Birkenstock wearers," and "trust fund babies," and actually looked for a correlation between those claims and the voting spread of Obama vs. Clinton. The charts are nerdily awesome and the post is fascinating, to say the least.

YOUmoz entries:

Best of YOUmoz:

  • Calamier wrote Help! I’ve Been SEO Sabatoged!, which accounts his discovery of a massive influx of spammy links to his site and his worries about how the search engines will react. It’s a great post–well, not the situation, but it sparked a great discussion and some tips on how to address something like that if it happens to you.

New events added to the Events Calendar:

No new events were added this week.

New additions to the SEOmoz Marketplace:

Featured job postings:

Featured companies:

United States/North America:

Featured resumes:

  • Welf didn’t offer a whole lot of information about him (or her) self, but he/she is looking for employment.
  • Ann Smarty (aka SEO Smarty) is an experienced SEO consultant, blogger, and social media marketer who is currently looking for employment. Ann provides a lot of great value and insight to the SEOmoz community, and her YOUmoz entries are among our best user-generated content.

SEO Video Subdomain Clean Up :: Social Marketing News

April 18th, 2008

I recently glanced at our SEO videos subdomain and was disappointed with the layout and formatting, so I spent the last couple days adding videos, categorizing them, and adding introductory text. With that subdomain only having 1% of our overall traffic, it hints at how bad the old formatting was. Please let me know what you think of the new subdomain.

Things have been going quite well since we formally launched the SEO community and training program.

  • I have been blown away by the quality of discussion on the forums. On more than one occasion I have opened up a number of tabs for answering different questions, answered a question, and then looked at how great another answer was by different members who answered quicker than I did, where I erased my answer to write “____’s answer was better.” It is inspiring to see the community work out that well so early on.
  • In less than 2 months since formally launching I have made over 2,000 forum posts, and it seems this business model scales better than the old model and offers much better interaction between clients and I. Rather than trying to rush to get through all the emails (as one does when they get 100’s every day) there is enough time to really interact with customers. The back and forth and variety of participants really enhances learning, and helps me focus on what training modules to create. Smilies.
  • Yesterday I figured out how to embed YouTube videos in the forums, and today we got cool new smilies (white hat, black hat, Google, spam, money, and a cheers mug)
  • The first month after launch I was able to make 4 video PowerPoint training modules. I got nothing but great feedback on those and want to see if I can create at least a few of them a month. Ideally I would make one a week, but eventually I will end up running out of topics at that pace. I have not been creating much video content for the blog because I want to make most of that stuff subscriber only. I probably need to figure out some balance on this front.
  • In the last 3 weeks we had 2 conferences and finished up taxes, and yet were able to keep up fine with both the forum and email. That bodes well for future growth potential and scalability.
  • I use Google Docs to take notes on what to update and what to add to our monthly newsletters. Google recently over-wrote one of these, but luckily I had a saved offline copy and was able to restore it.
  • Recently I did way too many interviews. I think it is important to be aggressive with self promotion when you do new launches, but I bet my interviews would have been better received if I spaced some of them out. I got to feeling a bit unoriginal because when you do that many interviews the questions tend to overlap, and so do some of the answers.
  • The developer of our Rank Checker extension just had another baby (or his wife did). So updates to that will take a bit. I plan on creating a bunch more software, but much of it will likely be decentralized due to the added reliability and cost benefit of decentralization. The decentralization does not lock in users as well as the centralization model does, but at the end of the day if the product is better that is all that matters.
  • In the background of all that I did a joint venture partnership with another big player in our space. I just saw the first version of some of that work and it is looking quite exciting. More news on that front coming soon.

The percentage of site traffic that comes to our blog is now down to ~ 40%. I hope to keep growing traffic, but drive that down to about 30% by the time the year is out, through expanding our training program, community, and tools offerings. There is lots of growth opportunity in creating more tools and improving the integration between our training modules and our community forums.

I have a couple more blog posts I want to make in the next few days, but I am going to start focusing more efforts on cross integrating the community forums with the training modules, and looking for other ways to add value to the membership area of the site.

There are also a few lead content ideas kicking around in my head. I hope to have at least one or two of these done before the month is out. Thanks for reading even though my publishing has been a bit sporadic. Hopefully a few of those features will help make up for that.

Correction: Yahoo’s Minimum Bid Interface Live, Not The New Pricing :: Web 2.0 News

April 18th, 2008

Yesterday I inaccurately reported that Yahoo’s new minimum bid prices were live. That was wrong. What is live is the new user interface that shows one’s minimum bid. In fact, I showed a screen shot of the location of where Yahoo will show you your new minimum bid:

Yahoo Minimum Bid Live

But, an official Yahoo representative, YahooPete, came to WebmasterWorld to notify us that only the user interface has changes and the new prices have not yet gone live. That honestly surprises me, because I was told the new prices were coming early this week and being Thursday, we are not late this week.

In any event, YahooPete clarified saying:

Since we’re close to launching minimum bid changes, some advertisers may notice user interface changes. We expect the actual bid changes to go live soon.

I will keep watching the space and let you know as soon as I see an update.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.

I Broke the Law and the Law (made me number) One :: Social Blog Network News

April 17th, 2008

Posted by Danny Dover

I really like YouTube. It is brilliantly easy to use, almost universally accessible, and unparalleled in its ability to popularize creative and funny people. YouTube is single handedly responsible for causing an irreversible drop in world productivity while simultaneously bringing countless amounts of joy to average people. It does this without charging users and while staying mostly advertising free.

As an emerging SEO, I can’t help but to view this platform from a marketing perspective. This website serves user generated content to millions of people daily. Everyday, normal people upload creative (or useless) videos and watch while people from all over the world leave feedback on their creations. YouTube has become a free avenue to digitally immortalize the funniest, cutest, and dumbest people society has to offer.

I was reminded about this tonight while eating dinner. My brother and I were arguing about something food related and I was reminded of one of my favorite Saturday Night Live skits. It is a short about Adam Samberg punching people right before they eat. Vulgar and rudimentary? Yes. However, hilarious nonetheless.

SNL Skit
(See below to understand why I can’t embed it)

After dinner I went on YouTube to watch the skit. Upon searching for it, I was shown a pageful of amateur reenactments. Disappointed, I went to another video website to find the gem. I quickly found it, showed it to my family, and laughed. Looking back on not finding it on YouTube, I concluded that it must have been removed due to copyright violations.

I contemplated uploading the copyrighted video to YouTube and being the sole contributor of one of SNL’s best skits to the website’s community. In the user generated content world, it is not uncommon for success to be measured in pageviews rather than profits. I find a certain joy in posting or submitting something that is seen by hundreds or even hundreds of thousands of people. Even without receiving any tangible rewards, the knowledge that something I contributed positively affected many people’s day is a goal to strive for.

I acquired a copy of the video and logged into YouTube to upload it. I paused upon seeing the copyright notice and started thinking there is a reason this popular video is not on YouTube. I pondered for a second, decided I left enough commercial content in the video (Hulu anyone?), and said "Oh, what’s the worst that could happen?" I hit the upload button and waited.

About five minutes later I received an e-mail from YouTube on behalf of NBC.

e-mail notification from YouTube/NBC
When I receive E-mail, I get notified and have the chance to read part of the message

Oh…. that’s the worst thing that can happen. Fizzle… Suddenly it dawned on me that YouTube is owned by Google. Not only does Google have access to my primary address, but it also stores my credit card number, bank account number (Adsense), data on my finances, and information about where I work.

Sarah….. the internet is trying to send me to jail again…

Cautiously I logged into my Gmail account and clicked on the e-mail from YouTube/NBC.

Dear YouTube Member:

NBC Universal has claimed some or all visual content in your video SNL People Getting Punched Just Before Eating. This claim was made as part of the YouTube Content Identification program.

I continued reading, looking for some kind of loophole.

Your video is still live because NBC Universal has authorized the use of this content on YouTube. As long as NBC Universal has a claim on your video, they will receive public statistics about your video, such as number of views. Viewers may also see advertising on your video’s page. [You also can’t embed the video on other websites.]

Claim Details:

Copyright owner:
NBC Universal
Content claimed:
Some or all of the visual content
Policy:
Allow this content to remain on YouTube.

Send public statistics about this video to NBC Universal.

Applies to these locations:
Everywhere

Well, I didn’t see that coming. NBC was going to let me keep the video online without any repercussions. In return for me posting the company’s copyrighted content, all it wanted was access to publicly available viewing statistics of the video and the chance to advertise with its own content.

It appears that NBC finally understands the power of online marketing. All I wanted to do was share my favorite content with friends, family, and about a half billion of my closest internet acquaintances. The studio executives understand this and finally have matured to the point where they are willing to let me and other internet  users promote NBC content.

I am thrilled to see old media working with new media in such a progressive way. I understand that NBC is really scheming to make money off of my promotional efforts. However, it has started to work with me as opposed to continuing to fight me. When I TiVo TV shows or download music, it is not because I want to strip TV writers or musicians from profits. I just want to enjoy the content in a way that is convenient for me. I am sorry to see hard working employees of the music, film, and television industry lose their jobs but I don’t feel bad for the industries as a whole. Just as light bulbs replaced candles as the primary indoor light source, the modern media industries are being replaced by newer technologies. Industrial evolution is a fact of business that’s inevitable.

It is refreshing to see NBC working with new technologies to find solutions rather then acting like its counterpart, the RIAA, and fighting change. Well done, NBC, I am glad that I could be part of your initial steps in the right direction.

The Economics of Credibility :: Web 2.0 News

April 17th, 2008

Everyone who is popular gains detractors along the way. And detractors tend to flock together and vote for other people who share their opinions. That trend virtually guarantees any valuable brand will have dirt ranking somewhere in the search results. The more valuable the brand gets the more people who will gun to unearth the dirt.

With so much competition for attention, many publishers believe they need to offer bold predictions quickly in order to be remarkable. And when those predictions go wrong people are creating documentaries about how wrong you are. Jim Cramer recently mentioned that Bear Stearns was fine right and talked about how unsophisticated the naysayers were (and how they never did their homework)

Days after Jim said Bear Stearns was fine, they were bought out for pennies on the dollar. Not only does Comedy Central offer their take, but other mini-documentaries and flames have appeared

If you are a publisher and your business model requires you to find new customers every day then you need to keep competing for attention. In many markets that will put you in a Jim Cramer-like position where you end up making some bad calls that cost you a lot of money in the long run.

Adam Audette has been posting some great stuff lately. Check out his posts on link building fundamentals and internet marketing and the limitations of language.

Dan Durick posted about how the economy can affect search behavior. Look at the numerous sources and graphics included in his post. It adds a lot of depth and credibility to the piece, because it relies on third party data and is more work than a typical spammer is willing to do (though many low level linkbaits do source 3rd party stats as a strategy). Anytime you add in 3rd party data you become a guy speaking truth and teaching rather than the salesman. Just by glancing at that blog post and knowing what you already know about search and market research data you have a big advantage over 99% of your market.
