Some Google AdSense publishers are reporting issues with their payment history reports via WebmasterWorld.

The reports go as far back as October 26th. One member described it as, “earnings for october with low figure has been credited and debited in my history page. Totally confusing.”

But it seems like many have seen this issue resolved a couple days ago.

Some people report it being fixed after emailing Google about the issue, but others say, it has yet to be fixed for them. Some are so concerned that they are printing out reports manually, just to have proof of their earnings for the month.

To make things simple for the folks in China, Google has purchased g.cn, the shortest domain name I’ve ever seen… in 2003. But they just activated it now and it already seems all set up for the Chinese populous.

Since China is a threat to Google, with most of the searchers using Baidu, this is a good move for Google — and it probably should have been done earlier. Will it work? We shall see.

Other forum members are curious to know how much Google paid for that one-letter domain name, even though it occurred 4 years ago. I know how coveted those are!

Last week, Newsweek reported that the Google “algorithm” paired up two African American leaders with monkeys, as the screenshot suggests:

Newsweek: Racist Google?

Is Google racist?

They fault this on their algorithms. Other bad image-text links are inevitable. Newsweek cites a few more examples:

Recently Google News mismatched stories on Argentina’s newly elected president Cristina Fern ndez with a photo of the California wildfires. A photo of the late Australia crocodile hunter Steve Irwin accompanied a report on the stock market. And thanks to the fast-breaking developments at Merrill Lynch, O’Neal managed to evolve. After he was forced to retire Tuesday in the wake of massive subprime losses, Google News illustrated the story with a 1939 photo of Katharine Hepburn taken during the filming of “The Philadelphia Story.”

That’s right. There’s really no way for computers at this point to discern what is in the contents of an image. It is still reliant upon human intervention. If you want to help rectify things (and please have good intentions!), you can play the Image Labeler game.

Are 301s a bad idea? Why or when should you use them? Does Google penalize you if you get trigger happy and 301 everything in sight? Two WebmasterWorld threads ask the same questions.

In the first thread, a forum member is a bit peeved at his competition because he has a bunch of domains that 301 to a main site — but each one looks pretty spammy especially since they appear to be “monopoliz[ing] the area.” Is this a good idea?

In general, people do that. Trademark concerns, for example, drive folks to buy domains that may infringe on trademarks but naturally 301 those domains to their main site. Is that bad? Nope. In fact, it’s better to 301 than to park the domain!

But is there a such thing as too many 301s? Perhaps not. Keywords in a domain name don’t necessarily boost rankings, so if you’re a site like Search Engine Roundtable and created a bunch of spin-off domain names that had good keywords, that doesn’t mean you’ll rank better.

From experience, members have not seen any penalties from excessive 301s, but Matt Cutts gave a warning once:

With the “abuse” potential of 301s this is a question I’ve often wondered about and found remarkably little info on, the only semi-official mention on it was a remark by MC saying it could be risky to have off-topic anchor text pointing to a site.

That makes sense.

There’s just one word of advice when you redirect: if you do implement 301s (at least internally), make sure to update your sitemap, or the Google Webmaster Tools might inform you that you have too many redirects.

It appears that what was once an advertising deal between AOL and Quigo is now turning into a $300 investment, as Brett Tabke shares a report about this acquisition.

The purchase is designed to help the Time Warner unit better compete against the stepped up online ad initiatives from Google and Yahoo. Quigo’s two main ad serving products include AdSonar, which is similar to AdSense in terms of providing targeted placements on websites and through searches, and FeedPoint, a search engine marketing tool.

This is a great direction for AOL and Quigo, as forum members report.

Congrats to the hard working folks at Quigo. AOL is living up to its stated goal of becoming one of the major players in online advertising going forward.

Hopefully this will also make Quigo a bigger player in the advertising sphere.

A couple weeks ago we reported that Google would enable code free changes to AdSense with a new Ad Management interface.

Reports are coming in from DigitalPoint Forums that Google has begun the initial roll out of the feature. Part of this feature is a new ad management screen that will replace parts of the old ad setup screen, I believe.

In addition, there is brand new AdSense code to be placed on your pages. The code looks like this now:

<script type=”text/javascript”><!–
google_ad_client = “pub-********”;
//728×90, date de cr ation 05/11/07
google_ad_slot = “1938325945″;
google_ad_width = 728;
google_ad_height = 90;
//–></script>
<script type=”text/javascript”
src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
</script>

Not everyone has this new feature yet, I personally do not have it at the time I am writing this. But there are many reporting that they are currently seeing it in their AdSense Console.

Here is a screen capture from someone who actually sees the new interface:

Can jazz musicians really teach you a thing or two about effective blogging? Absolutely. The skills that make a jazz artist legendary are also a big part of what bloggers need to succeed. On the other hand, some bloggers are hurting themselves by emulating what many jazz musicians inadvertently do to lose the audience. The main way that […] (more…)
